Planning your Akagera safari budget starts with understanding the park's fee structure. Akagera National Park, managed by African Parks in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), charges entry fees that directly fund conservation, anti-poaching patrols, and community development programmes. Park Entry Fees (2026 Rates)
Park entry fees are structured by residency status: international tourists, foreign residents of Rwanda, and East African Community nationals each have different rate tiers. Children aged 6-12 receive a 50% discount across all categories. Children under 6 enter free of charge. Vehicle Fees
If you're driving into the park, vehicle fees apply separately from entry fees. Fees differ for foreign-registered and Rwandan-registered vehicles. Motorcycles and bicycles are not permitted inside the park for safety reasons. If you're joining an organised safari, vehicle fees are typically included in your package price. Activity Permits & Costs
Beyond basic park entry, individual activities have separate fees. Guided game drives, boat safaris on Lake Ihema, night game drives, guided bird watching walks, and fishing permits are each priced separately. Payment Methods
Akagera accepts multiple payment methods for your convenience. Cash in US Dollars and Rwandan Francs is accepted at the park gates. Visa and Mastercard credit/debit cards are accepted at both entry gates and the main lodges. Mobile Money (MTN MoMo and Airtel Money) is accepted for payments — a convenient option for those already in Rwanda. For organised safari packages booked through tour operators, payment is typically made in advance via bank transfer, card, or Mobile Money.
How to Save on Park Fees
The most cost-effective approach is booking a complete safari package that bundles all fees together. Our packages include park entry, vehicle, guide, activities, accommodation, and meals at a lower total cost than booking each component separately. If you're staying multiple days, your 24-hour entry fee means you can enter in the afternoon, stay overnight, and continue the next morning on a single entry ticket. East African residents should always carry their national ID to qualify for reduced rates.
Important Tips
Park gates are open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM — you must enter before closing time. Keep your entry receipt throughout your visit as rangers may check it. Fees are subject to annual review, so confirm current rates before your trip. Booking activities in advance is strongly recommended during peak season (June-September) as capacity is limited. All fees contribute directly to Akagera's world-renowned conservation programme, so your visit directly supports wildlife protection.
