A Safari Like No Other
The boat safari on Lake Ihema is one of Akagera's most distinctive experiences. Unlike a traditional game drive, the boat safari brings you onto the water, offering an entirely different perspective on the park's incredible wildlife. Lake Ihema is the largest of the chain of lakes along the Akagera River, and its calm waters are teeming with hippos, crocodiles, and an extraordinary variety of waterbirds. It's a must-do activity for any visitor to Akagera.
What You'll See
Hippos are the stars of the show — Lake Ihema has one of the highest concentrations of hippos in East Africa. You'll see them in groups of 20-50 or more, surfacing, snorting, and occasionally displaying their massive jaws. Nile crocodiles are regularly spotted basking on the shores. Birdlife is phenomenal: African fish eagles, goliath herons, pied kingfishers, malachite kingfishers, open-billed storks, and if the season is right, flocks of migrating pelicans and flamingos. Monitor lizards, otters, and sitatunga antelope are also spotted from the boat.
The Boat Safari Experience
The boat safari departs from the Akagera jetty on the shores of Lake Ihema. The trip lasts approximately 2 hours, though this can vary depending on sightings. A knowledgeable guide accompanies every trip, providing expert commentary on the wildlife and ecology. The boats are motorised with comfortable seating and life jackets for all passengers. The pace is relaxed, allowing plenty of time for photography and simply soaking in the scenery of the lake surrounded by papyrus-fringed shores and distant hills.
Booking & Costs
Boat safaris should be booked in advance, especially during peak season (June-September). Contact us for current rates. The trip is included in most 2-day and 3-day safari packages. Boats depart at scheduled times, with morning trips typically offering the best light and wildlife activity. Groups of up to 8 passengers can be accommodated per boat. Private boat charters are available for those wanting an exclusive experience.
What to Bring
Essential items include sunscreen (the water reflects UV strongly), a hat, sunglasses, binoculars for distant bird sightings, a camera with a zoom lens, and a light rain jacket just in case. Avoid loose items that could fall into the water. Wear comfortable clothing and closed shoes with good grip. The boat can rock gently, so if you're prone to motion sickness, take precautions. Water and light snacks are usually provided.
Best Time for the Boat Safari
Early morning departures (7:00-9:00 AM) offer the best light for photography and the most active wildlife. Hippos are more visible in the cooler morning hours, and birdlife is at its peak. Afternoon trips (3:00-5:00 PM) offer beautiful golden light and the chance to see hippos becoming more active as evening approaches. The dry season (June-September) provides the best overall conditions with clear skies and calm waters.
